Hermione
Character Description
Hermione is the Queen of Sicilia, wife to King Leontes, and the mother of Mamillius and Perdita. She fulfills her roles with a tender dignity and grace that is not found in the opposite sex. Her nurturing nature is admirable as she displays love without weakness and maintains her saint-like composure without pride or coldness. After going through her tumultuous journey of experiencing shame, degradation and grief, Hermione keeps an unimpassioned exterior calmness.
Hermione is compared to Juliet, Miranda, and Isabella because of her internal power and profound pathos. She is the character that brings everyone together in The Winter’s Tale with life and a strong foundation of love. Shakespeare presents Hermione as a constant figure of grace and regality. Coming from a royal Russian family, Hermione has an innate maternal essence that counterbalances the jealous and rampant nature of Leontes.
While studying the role of Hermione, I have discovered the traits we share and differ from. Her character has revealed an intimate nature of understanding and kindness that I believe every person is capable of; shown through her actions as a queen, a prisoner, and even in exile. Her patience is insurmountable, which I admire because it far surpasses mine. However her love for wit and banter is a characteristic we share. This Shakespearean character is one of my favorites out of all he's created because of her depth and versatility. My only wish is to bring to life what he created on paper and do it justice "for who please to come, and heare."
