Camillo
Character Description
Camillo is equal parts wise man and sidekick, the right hand man and advisor of King Leontes. He compliments the king and creates a space for Leontes to be vulnerable. Possessing distinct traits of brilliance, social prowess, and compassion, Camillo is a man of honor. Loyalty is a huge factor in Camillo’s decision-making process. He is not above a laugh or enjoying himself at a feast. He garners a wisdom not found in books, a human intellect that cuts straight to the heart of the situation. Though he is rooted in honor, If under duress, Camillo has the capability to take on a duplicitous role to achieve his end and protect what he takes pride in.
Camillo’s objective in Shakespeare’s The Winter’s Tale is that of a protector. He takes care of the court and kingdom of Sicilia. Most of his energy and time is spent in service of the throne, managing the affairs of King Leontes. Camillo dances between the line of furtiveness and integrity, weighing the options of each situation as it surfaces. The scale tips mostly in the direction of honor and honesty. Betrayal is a last resort for Camillo, and he would only deign to dishonesty when those in his care become a danger to themselves and those around them. He is the trusted subject, servant, father figure, confidant, and friend betwixt Sicilia and Bohemia.
My journey into Camilo has been an awakening in terms of text analysis and performance. Diving into the character has opened me to the possibilities and opportunities in movement, stage presence, and vocal work on stage. I have learned to justify my movement, listen actively to the words that give birth to impulse, and bring the text to life. The work that has gone into rehearsal has culminated into something beautiful, something I can be proud of. I look forward to seeing the finished product of this production, watching the character evolve before my very eyes.
